Who was Neils Bohr? ALI PLEASE SWER -He was Danish physicist who made a foundational contributions to understanding the atomic TH E LAST QUESTION IN
structure and also quantum theory, for which he received Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. THIS THREAD FROM THE What is the Bohr model of the hydrogen atom? PROFESSOR AT THE BOTTOM
Bohr model is explained in 4 principles 1) Electrons generally assume only certain orbits around nucleus and these orbits are stable and called ”stationary” orbits. 2) Each of the orbit has energy associated with it. For instance the orbit closest to nucleus has an energy E1, the next closest E2 and so on. 3) Light is emitted when electron jumps from higher orbit to lower orbit and absorbed when it jumps from a lower to higher orbit. 4) The energy and also frequency of light emitted or absorbed is given by difference between the two orbit energies What did the model get right?
-Bohr was in a way able to explain the stability of atoms as well as emission spectrum of hydrogen What did it get wrong? -The theory only explains origin of spectrum in 1 electron systems i.e hydrogen, He+, Li+, Be+,etc) but
not origin of spectrum in multi-electron systems like He , Li, Be,etc. -Bohr also suggested circular orbits of electrons around nucleus of hydrogen atom, but researches
have shown that the motion of electron isn’t in a single plane., but it takes place in 3 dimensional
space. Actually, the atomic model is not flat Re: Chapter 6 – DO 1
